ABC News adds to the... corpses!

zombie hands by zenobia_joy
A quick update to the post below about ABC News contributing the the global commons of reusable content and to the pile of decaying corpses at ABC Pool's The Dead Walk! group.
ABC has officially released its first professional news footage shot for the project. All three segments released by the ABC are available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 Unported licence. You can get them from the ABC News profile on Pool.
The sad news coming out of the project, however, is that Australian horror author Robert Hood has been eaten by a pack of zombies while recording the trailer BrokenSea Audio Production's upcoming audio drama Zombie Cheerleaders 2: Pom-Poms of Death. See Gary Kemble's news post for the full story.
Although everyone loves archives footage, it is fantastic to see the ABC compliment their recent releases in that area with contemporary broadcast footage.

An Australian news first as The Dead Walk at ABC Pool

How about a ride lady? by Giulio Saggin
In an Australian first, the ABC is releasing raw news footage under CC - and its of zombies!
As a joint project with the ABC's collaborative webspace, Pool, ABC News Online is uploading the audio, video and photos from its coverage of the Brisbane Zombie Walk under a CC licence for people to mash up, remix and generally have fun with. [NB - for the time being only logged in users can see licensing information for material on Pool. It's a bug that Pool are fixing]
And to get people going, Pool has launched a dedicated The Dead Walk group and have made a call out for people to upload their own material and combine it with the news footage to tell their story of how they survived the zombie apocalypse. The best material will be featured on ABC News Online.
While this is all a bit of undead fun, it's also a pretty impressive milestone in the ABC's ongoing efforts to embrace the Gov2.0 movement give it resources back to the people who fund it - you!
<!--break-->
From the Pool posting:
Zombies. They stink, they rot, they want to eat your brains. In short, they don't have much going for them! Why is it then that every year, thousands of people hit the streets dressed up as them? Maybe it's because zombies are such social creatures. Whenever you see them, they're always milling around, hunting like a pack of shambling wolves, or sharing a meal. So what better subject matter for such a social place as Pool.
ABC News Online will upload raw audio, video and photos from the Brisbane Zombie Walk to the Pool Dead Walk! group. You're free to use this content as a starting point, or for remixes and mash-ups.
But we also want to hear from you. Are you a zombie lurcher? If so, why - what do you get out of it? Have you ever seen a zombie walk/lurch and what did you make of it? If you went to the Brisbane Zombie Walk, we'd love you to share your photos, video, audio and anecdotes.
The footage is already going up - we've got zombie babies, zombie dogs and zombie Santas - with more planned to be uploaded over the next few days.
So get mashing. Brains not included.
correction: the image above was initially incorrectly identified as being by Gary Kemble. It is actually by Giulio Saggin of ABC News Online.

Open Culture meets Business - How to Open Business Seminar to be held on Nov 13, 2009
Open culture can not only create public value but also generate business opportunities. Aiming at providing a strategic approach to developing new open-based business models, Creative Commons Korea holds "How to Open Business" seminar in Seoul on November 13, 2009. In the seminar, various open-based business models will be presented through examples while attendees will have the opportunity to identify new business models of their own.
The one-day event will start with the opening remarks by Prof. Jinsup Jung, chief of CC Korea, to be followed by the keynote speech by Sangki Steve Han, the Graduate School of Culture Technology of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
CC Korea staff Su-jeong Han will give a general introduction on open business strategies through practical examples and case studies. The seminar will be highlighted by two well recognized international figures: Sylvain Zimmer, founder and CTO of Jamendo, and Chiaki Hayashi, founder and PMO of Loftwork, will share their valuable knowledge and experience about developing a viable and profitable business model based on open culture.
Double Deck, a Korean digital music performance group, will also rock the audience with their powerful live performance. Double Deck is one of the first Korean musicians who shared their works under creative commons licenses.
The final session of the event is "Open Business Speech," where anyone can present their open business ideas and be given the rare opportunity to receive consultation and business advice from established experts from various fields.
On the following day, the seminar presenters will also be joined by those who share the value of open culture in the CC Salon. Register van de Dag van Gister
CC Netherlands, October 21, 2009 12:57 PM License: Naamsvermelding 3.0 Nederland

CC Germany, October 13, 2009 06:12 PM License: Namensnennung 2.0 Deutschland

CC Netherlands, October 12, 2009 12:29 PM License: Naamsvermelding 3.0 Nederland

Dear Creative Commoner,
This has been a big year for the Al Jazeera Network and our use of Creative Commons. In January we launched the world’s first repository of broadcast quality video footage released under a Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution (CC BY) license. At the time we made select Al Jazeera video footage – initially, footage of the War on Gaza – available for free to be downloaded, shared, remixed, subtitled and eventually rebroadcast by users and TV stations across the world, under the condition that they attribute the material to us.
A large part of embracing free culture is accepting the fact that you are forsaking control in exchange for something greater – the empowerment of the creative community. This means that you never quite know where things will lead. When launching our repository, we had thought that it would be a key resource for anyone producing content on the war and that it would primarily be used by other news organisations and documentary filmmakers.
What we saw was both surprising and delightful. Soon after posting our first video, Wikipedia editors had extracted images to enhance the encyclopedia entries on the War on Gaza. Soon thereafter educators, filmmakers, videogame developers, aid agencies and music video producers all used and built upon our footage. We were encouraged by the warm reception with which our content was received by the free culture community.
Joichi Ito, CEO of Creative Commons said at the launch, “Video news footage is an essential part of modern journalism. Providing material under a Creative Commons license to allow commercial and amateur use is an enormous contribution to the global dialog around important events. Al Jazeera has set the example and the standard that we hope others will follow”.
Being part of a community goes beyond the launch of a single project – it involves long term commitment and shared values. Our association with Creative Commons goes back to 2007 when Lawrence Lessig, the founder of Creative Commons, delivered a keynote address at our 3rd Al Jazeera Forum in Doha, Qatar, where he challenged us to make our content freely available in order to further the values of free speech. This was a challenge that we took seriously – in addition to our Creative Commons Repository, we also make a large part of our output freely available on our YouTube channel.
After the launch of our Repository we co-hosted a workshop with Creative Commons on “Building Successful Media Projects in Open Networks,” which was moderated by Creative Common’s CEO Joichi Ito. This workshop was broadcast live throughout the Middle East as part of our 4th Al Jazeera Forum held in March 2009, which was an international gathering of nearly 200 journalists, analysts, academics, and intellectuals.
While having successfully reached out to new audiences through Creative Commons licensing, the real endorsement of what we achieved was in this note by Lawrence Lessig:
“Al Jazeera is teaching an important lesson about how free speech gets built and supported. By providing a free resource for the world, the network is encouraging wider debate, and a richer understanding”.
Working with Creative Commons has been an enriching experience. We are thankful for all the help, advice and assistance that we received along the way from Lawrence Lessig, Joi Ito, and the rest of the wonderful team that works to spread free culture.
The unintended collaboration that arose as a result of our video repository, and its positive reception worldwide, would not have been possible without the help of Creative Commons licensing. We support this effort because we have witnessed, and continue to witness, the benefits of contributing to and strengthening the digital commons. In whatever capacity you are able, I hope you will also support CC by contributing to this organization and by adding to the commons. I urge you to go forth and license!
Sincerely,
Mohamed Nanabhay

Lancering AkaWiki site
CC Netherlands, October 12, 2009 07:40 AM License: Naamsvermelding 3.0 Nederland

If you love us let us know

Creative Commons has officially launched its 2009 fundraising campaign with the announcement of a new special-edition remixed Creative Commons T-shirt, with a logo (pictured) designed by Shepard Fairey - the artist behind the Obama Hope poster that has become an online (and offline) meme. So now you can contribute to a good cause and look snazzy at the same time.
From the CC International blog:
We are reshaping history as we speak. Millions of CC supporters across the globe – creators, consumers, and advocates – have shown that they believe in the importance of universal access to information online. If we want future generations to enjoy the kind of rich culture that we all deserve, we must invest today in the future of creativity and knowledge.
We hate asking for money, but even non-profits don't run for free (as in beer). As with last year, CC has set a goal of US$500,000 by 31 December. So if you've got a few dollars lying round and you support free culture, consider donating to CC. Or buying a t-shirt.
And if you don't have a few dollars but you still want to help out, spread the word (we've got cool tools to help you do it). Or just use CC or raise awareness of open copyright and you'll be doing your bit.

Singapore – CC Monitor

For those interested in Creative Commons related data for Singapore and other jurisdictions, check out the CC Monitor site at monitor.creativecommons.org/Main_Page. It is a site that “contains automatically collected data, graphs, research and collectively written commentary on the global adoption of Creative Commons licenses”.
From the page on Singapore:
Compared to the rest of Asia, Singapore has a higher freedom score. With 31.5% of Singaporeans choosing the most liberal BY license, compared to Asia with 7.1%. BY-NC-ND was also a popular choice with almost 24%. However, compared to 43.7% of Asia choosing the same license, Singaporeans still choose less restrictive licenses as a whole.

CC Monitor is a project initiated by Creative Commons and the Communications and New Media Programme of the National University of Singapore, with support from the Social Science Research Council and the Ford Foundation. Content is available under Attribution 3.0 Unported license.
BTW, our CC SG public lead, Giorgos Cheliotis, is also a founding member of the CC Monitor project. Several other contributors are also based in Singapore, like Ankit Guglani (SMU), Clint Gono (SMU), Jackson Tan (NUS), Pratichi Joshi (NUS), Sofia Morales (NUS). The Singapore page (as of 12 May ‘09) includes responses from CC-SG community manager, Ivan Chew (in response to an interview by Jackson Tan, as well as from Giorgos Cheliotis.
If you have insights to share about CC-adoption in Singapore (e.g. you’re a CC-adoptor yourself or you consciously do not want to adopt CC), the CC-SG team would love to hear from you.

It’s a collaborative effort, featuring three other very talented and very cool people I befriended at ccMixter. It includes an original 4-way collaborative track, pieced together without having met one another.
Here’s the title track, Under The Velveteen Skies

Netlabels con Creative Commons en Chile
CC Chile, October 08, 2009 12:15 PM License: Atribución-No Comercial-Licenciar Igual 2.0 Chile
